Autism STEP: Enabling All Kids To Shine

Autism STEP

Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) is the most researched and clinically proven therapy for Autism.

Autism STEP is a specialist in ABA therapy and understands that it is essential for regulating a child’s behaviour, socialisation, and communication. The organisation has programmes that will enable him to speak and carry himself with confidence.

About Autism STEP

Autism STEP

Autism STEP believes that each child is an individual who has specific learning needs. It delivers programmes that allow each child to progress at a pace that suits him.

Its therapists emphasise inclusivity. They help children with special needs assimilate into mainstream society by teaching self-regulation. These highly-trained individuals help children increase their language competencies and manage behaviours. Apart from improving cognitive development, they boost social and self-help skills.

The word STEP in Autism STEP stands for Special Transition Educational Programme. The organisation’s therapists understand that each child has unique needs and designs educational programmes for each one. They have years of experience working with children with special needs. These highly-trained individuals stress communication and forge deep bonds with their students. They seek new methodologies and continuously upgrade their skills.

Autism STEP promotes children’s intellectual, motor, social, and emotional skills. It moves in tandem with their families and consequently, helps them to improve the quality of their lives.

ABA Therapy Programme And Other Services

Autism STEP

Autism STEP offers a variety of comprehensive programmes that will help to improve the speech and behaviour of autistic children.

1. Home-Based One-to-One ABA Programme

ABA therapy, a field of behavioural analysis, involves analysing behaviours to determine how learning is taking place. It provides insight into a child’s behavioural problems and employs positive reinforcement to bring about desired behaviours. Autism STEP, specialists in ABA, have on hand a range of techniques that get to the root of a child’s behavioural issues. It is a safe and effective treatment for Autism.

The organisation offers ABA programmes, conducted in children’s home environments. A Programme Manager evaluates the child before designing a plan that will suit his needs. It will provide a sufficient challenge, and take his emotional boundaries into account. The programme manager will modify it according to the child’s progress.

The Home Programme enhances a child’s cognitive abilities to meet the standards of mainstream education. It also hones his motor skills, specifically motor planning, or developing a series of actions.

Furthermore, it nurtures his visuospatial skills. The child will learn to manipulate two and three-dimensional figures. The programme will help him perceive things holistically instead of merely looking at details.

It strengthens the child’s linguistic abilities as well. He will learn the grammatical structures of the English language. If necessary, the programme manager will use PECs, (Picture Exchange Communication System) to assist children who are non-verbal. Autism STEP has managed to get children who are non-verbal to speak.

The PECS system is an alternative communication that helps people with learning and speaking difficulties.

Autism Step Therapy

It assists individuals with various physical and cognitive impairments (e.g., Cerebral Palsy), including those with Autism. Autism STEP has used it, with a high degree of success, to help non-verbal children to communicate.

The child will learn social norms, such as recognising emotions and turn-taking. Furthermore, he will develop social skills such as receiving compliments, getting to know others and tone of voice. He will also learn the essential skills of eye contact and social conversation.

2.School Shadowing Programme

The classroom is stressful for children with autism. Crowds and other stimuli may trigger unwanted behaviours and obsessions. Furthermore, children may find it difficult to express themselves. It’s hard for them to understand instructions.

Despite these challenges, parents enrol their children in school to learn accepted behavioural norms and social skills. Doing so gives kids the opportunity to put what they have learnt during therapy sessions into practice. Besides developing academic and social skills, schooling gives them the opportunity to establish relationships. It also gives them a chance to be part of a mainstream environment.

To make school a friendlier place, Autism STEP follows them unobtrusively. The purpose of doing so is to provide the supervision and support they may need and to enhance the benefits of the classroom.

3.Speech Therapy

Getting a child to communicate is every parents’ goal. Autism STEP’s speech therapy programmes do just that.

Autism STEP uses the Hanen More Than Words Programme, a uniquely designed speech therapy programme that taps on a child’s strengths to improve his communication skills.

Based on research and proven to work, the Hanen programme incorporates language and social skills into a child’s everyday routines.

The programme enables a child to articulate phonemes and words. It teaches word recognition and gives him opportunities to practice polysyllabic words.

Autism STEP also offers an Articulation Therapy programme. A child will learn to produce sounds and syllables. He will recognise which are correct and practise these sounds in different words.  He will learn to create them in bisyllabic and multisyllabic words as well. It benefits children who cannot pronounce words because they have underdeveloped oral muscle tissues.

4. Psychological Assessments

Quality and detail are essential when diagnosing a child. Autism STEP provides comprehensive psychological assessments.

While some organisations take half a year to evaluate a child, Autism STEP takes just three to four weeks. It gives him three different days to do the assessment and show his abilities. Autism STEP can still gain accurate information if he has meltdowns on even two of the three occasions. The provision enables a precise evaluation.
